Simples, don't go on the motorway, there's more fun ways to get from A to B.

Just enjoy in! Or make a game of predicting who's going to try and kill you next.

Did this on the way back from crief to sheffield (in one stint, stopping only to reffill and chug an iron bru) extremely dangerous. That night I slept for about 15 hours and couldn't hear for days. Not good if you're wanting to go out that night with your mate!

If I was doing that trip I would get off on the A5 at Junction 9 riding up to Miton Keynes (geographically slightly shorter too), then rejoin at junction 14 in MK. Between junction 9 and 13 it's basically all 50mph anyway due to roadworks, and this part of the A5 is perfect for making up time on a bike - overtake at will practically.

I'd then come off at Junction 28 (a38 westbound for a very short bit) to then get on the A61 which feeds you straight into Sheffield. This is geographically much shorter than staying on the M1.

I would personally do that cos like you said, motorways are a bore, and with the benefits of a bike I reckon journey time would probably be the same.
