Oil leak on my V-Strom... with pictures
So I got back from a rideout last week and found a nice rainbow under my bike the next morning. The underside of the bike was covered in oil which would explain my left boot being a bit oily which I'd assumed was down to the rain and an overactive scottoiler. Oops.
Anyway, managed to add almost 2 litres of oil to the bike and the engine doesn't sound brilliant. Narrowed it down to this... Not sure if the SV650 has the same but basically the oil was seeping out of the rubber sleeve on the pipe coming from the oil cooler. It seems it trapped water between the sleeve and the pipe causing it to corrode. From what I can tell, all V-Strom right hand oil pipes have this sleeve which doesn't seem to serve any real purpose. Pic below is after cutting off the sleeve. No obvious hole but the pipe is swollen and corroded. V-Strom forum talks of other people having the same issue which is frustrating. Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar issues? My bike is only 3 years old, seems ridiculous that Suzuki allow such an issue. I'm going to try getting a new one made by Pirtek rather than buying OEM. (16460-17G00) Last edited by Stenno; 04-02-14 at 01:01 PM. |

Oil leak on my V-Strom... with pictures
I had 2 go on my last SV. One at about 3 years the other at about 8. OEM hoses are expensive so Pirtek are a good option.
Design is a pig. The hoses get a hammering. They get very hot then blasted with all the spray, stones and anything else off the road. |

Yup my K3 fractured in exactly the same place. Same reason as Red Ones. Plus salt. Was after 7 winters it finally started spotting oil. Took a while to figure out.

Pirtek can be v dear, try a local hydraulics place, either standard (wire plus rubber sleeve) or shiny (ptfe hose stainless overbraid) with steel or stainless fittings will work.

Re: Oil leak on my V-Strom... with pictures
Good morning all.
I've seen plenty of oil hoses go the same way over the years. I don't think the sleeving helps, as it traps moisture, & salt etc, & causes the pipe to rust. As said, they're in a pretty poor location which doesn't help either. Regular doses of protector spray helps. Especially if the bike is used all year round. My 15 year old Divvy 900 is still on it's original hoses at 172k. They've been sprayed regularly. Nuff said. Cheers. |

Yeah I'm not nervous with the waxoyl on my XJ, then again I think most of the lily white SV owners would have to go for a little lie down after seeing that
Group buy of stainless braided oil hoses?

Hey Geodude! Got a tad disheartened with it plus was moving house etc, I'm hoping to do something soon!
You're not wrong, my local Pirtek just quoted me £130 for the PTFE with stainless overbraid! |
