Re: Battery - SV650s 2003
Really need to load test a suspect battery, can take 100 amps+ to start the engine and any sulphation will limit the rate at which battery can supply power (the sulphate coating covers the active material on the plates up, bit like a badly blocked air filter will limit engines performance) and also limit the amount of charge the battery will accept, so a Blapper says the battery may show fully charged but has very little energy stored.
The depth of discharge (DOD) is an important thing in the life of a battery, every time battery goes below about 80% it suffers damage which is cumulative and will shorten its life, the longer it stays low the worse it is.

Re: Battery - SV650s 2003
It states 300 to 500 current draw in instructions - may be a bit too low resistance for a motorcycle battery.

Re: Battery - SV650s 2003
I took my Yuasa out of the bike in September and kept it inside. It has a day on the Ctek in December and I put it on again overnight yesterday. Back in the bike today and the SV started up on the button first time.
Happy with that! |

Re: Battery - SV650s 2003
Knackered batteries often do this. They show a full charge when in fact they barely charge at all.

Re: Battery - SV650s 2003
Batteries that get daily use are batteries that last. If you are not using it, just leaving it is the worst thing you can do. Putting it on an intelligent (Optimate type) float charger is the best practical alternative.
Others will post what they do and get by with, but the above is fact. Last edited by Blapper; 19-02-17 at 11:01 AM. |

Re: Battery - SV650s 2003
What's the best way to handle a battery that won't/can't be in use for a minimum of six months when leaving it connected to a charger isn't an option?

Re: Battery - SV650s 2003
Chuck it in the bin and buy a new one in six months when you need it. Leaving a battery for six months without charging it at all will most probably kill it. Buy a smart charger that you can leave connected, it will pay for itself in the cost of one battery. Take battery off bike if possible, a bike without a battery will act as an immobilizer and may stop someone nicking it.

Re: Battery - SV650s 2003
Can you connect it to a charger every few weeks or even every couple of months?A full charge once in a while should keep it ok.
