Default The state of other peoples' bikes

I was at a biker cafe (Ponderosa in North Wales) yesterday, and about to ride off. A rider pulled up next to me on a Triumph Tiger and as I glanced over, I noticed the chain was bright orange with rust. I mean literally the colour of a satsuma all over and scabby too, as if it had been in the sea for a few weeks. No way would I ride a bike with a chain in that state. I nearly said something to the rider, but restrained myself.

Are you sometimes surprised by the state of other peoples' bikes?

Some riders just don't realise how much damage a broken chain can do.

As a cyclist, I see it all of the time on bicycles too. Supposedly intelligent adults riding around with brakes disconnected, flat tyres and chains that can barely run.

Some folks just have no mechanical empathy. Just look at the cars we drive, with some of them being rolling wrecks, while I worry when mine makes a new sound and then replace the brake callipers because it is cheaper than buying new piston seals, even though the MOT guy said it was fine!

I can't afford to replace a twenty year old car, a twenty year old motorbike or a twenty year old bicycle, so I have to keep them running well and regularly serviced. When you service these things yourself, you quickly learn how to do preventative maintenance too.

Came across this guys ytube channel - warning though, he is an American, (but then no one is perfect.) I have found him very engaging and informative ( it may be the beer contingent ) https://www.youtube.com/@wheelhousegarage His Saturday Bike and a beer offerings are watchable- loads of interesting facts onthe bike of the day, maybe I am swayed by the beer choice. The two are not really good bed partners though!
