Default MOT Question

Had a poke around on the internet and found lots of very helpful MOT sites but no one seems to mention mirrors.

Question is this:

Do you need mirrors on a bike to pass an MOT or are they not a required test item?

Thanks, J.

I've got mirrors on order! Due anytime now.

But... I've got a MOT due for tomorrow morning and they've not arrived yet. If it's a fail not to have mirrors then I'll go and grab some bar end jobs from down the road, if not, then I'll save myself the money.

Any stipulations regarding size/position/number of them? I've heard of (American) Hells Angels getting away with putting a single dentist's mirror (those tiny circular ones to see the bakc of your teeth) on a bar end to satisfy their legal requirement for mirrors...

Mirrors are no a requirement according to Aprillia!!!!! All my mates also agree, its not a requirement, and on my MOT certificate, if u look at the back about what it needs, mirrors are not mentioned!

Hence they sell a daylight road legal RS250 without indicators, lights or mirrors!

i dont think they are, but like indicators, if they are fitted they have to work ie not smashed etc.

dont quote me on that though.

It is a legal requirement under the road traffic act however the MOT requirements are a different level of standards so can't give you a definative answer

So I can get stopped for riding without them, but I might not fail my MOT?

Hmm, probably better safe than sorry. I'll pop out in the morning and get some. No doubt the ones I've ordered will arrive tomorrow afternoon.

doubt you'll get stopped after all traffic officers are an endangered species we'll soon be going to the natural history museum just to remind ourselves what they looked like and normal bobby's don't have a clue most of the time about the construction and use legislation. Obviously common sense would suggest you always ride WITH mirrors for your own safety but as you've said you have mirrors on order so your call.

After all no one breaks the law until they're caught!
