Pair of jeans and a pair of waterproof overtrousers from HG, or for the trendy route have alook at Lowe alpine/sprayway type stuff.

Kitkats daughter is wanting to get a 50cc bike in January when she turns 16 to get to college etc etc but she's not wanting to wear full gear ie textile jacket and trousers. Quite happy to wear proper boots and gloves will wear a jacket without persuation but doesn't want to wear textile trousers as she thinks everyone at college with think she's a muppet for wearing them instead of normal jeans or draggin jeans.

What does the org think?

DD

As i said at the weekend, i think you should be a sensible parent and get her straight down to JJB sports for the obligitory Trackie bottoms, Reeboks, Mackenzie hoddie amnd a basball cap.

Or threaten her with a BMW C1...no one would want to be seen at college in one of those!

Besides, they're so old they probably crashed before brakes were invented or something.

I'm failing to see the problem here, we all know that some lessons just have to be learnt the hard way by yourself, you sound like responsible parents/guardians and have ensured that she won't be learning the "riding without protection is painful and permanently disfiguring" lesson the hard way - so the only lessons she'll be learning the hard way are "winter is cold" and "rain makes you wet". In the grand scheme of things I think these are things we can safely let a 16 year old learn by herself.

In the Draggin v Hood debate I can only really comment from the Hood side - I like the Hood jeans a lot, they're very well made and I'm confident that the abrasion protection they offer is up there with many textiles (tested in two falls now, one at 30mph, the other at, erm, well, 0mph), they're reasonably comfortable in temperatures between 10 and 35 degrees (centigrade), but naturally they're as waterproof as a sieve. The Draggin jeans definitely look better though and I get the impression they're more all day comfortable - enough people on here seem to like Draggin jeans to keep me personally happy with their protection.
I agree with the above. Try and make sure she's protected, cold wet and miserable can be fixed quite cheaply with 2 piece waterproofs over the top of the protective gear, and can live under the seat of the scooter. That can be her choice at a later stage, should she feel the need. For now just try to make sure she's wearing half decent stuff. I'd be thinking hood / draggin jeans, leather / textile jacket, thinnish gloves, comfy boots and a decent lid.

Kitkat -
ask her why the big difference from being on the back of yours to her own? She'll be in control but thats still not going to stop some tw4t running into her.
she seems sensible enough (or did to me)
I don't think the shock tactics will work but trying to deal with a hormonal 16yr old where the world revolves around image and friends (and a hormaonal mother!) must be hard.
My mum was the same with me - i have to wear the gear or i don't go out - and i left home by then!
its sounds strange but try and find out whats shes scared of - and work on that tactic. She might be scared of looking out of place - but with everything comes a price and the price with biking is protection.
the dble standards she shows might be exactly what her mates show. "she's got the bike but no protection - what an idiot" behind her back - has she thought of that?
besides we hope that it will never happen but her friends won't sympathise at her when she's been off or possible even help with work if shes consitently off with illness due to the cold. She's worked hard for college does she want to throw it away by making herself susptible to illness through exposure etc etc.

Didn't think of that, 6 miles isn't going to do you much harm even int snow, but sitting damp all day won't do much good.

At the end of that day, 16 year old boys see a wee scottish 16 year old lass turn up on a bike, they are going to be interested in 2 things, the bike, and the Lass (in that order) not what she is wearing IMHO. If she turned up in Leathers, then, maybe, just maybe it would be the other way round, but doubtful
