Back on topic.. This thread is/was a useful thread! I know of somebody who thought it might be a good idea to lube the chain like this, but never did it yet. This thread illustrates the reason he didn't do it. Fear of internet riddicule. And pain.
I also work with an ex car mechanic who chopped some fingers off working in an engine bay with the motor running, and got a bit intimate with the alternator belt..

Certainly did, still not lived it down.

Lost then end of my right thumb from the bottom of nail plate. That was 2004. Had it re-operated on this year as had tumor growing in the bone and side of thumb tip.

I remember posting at the time a couple of people had heard of others doing it, one losing 3 fingers. I was holding a cloth that got tangled in the rear sprocket when cleaning chain in the middle and caught my thumb but it was idiotic of me, totally didn't think of the danger. So may people say how could you not have seen the danger, well duh, clearly I didn't and lots of others don't either. A mechanic showed me how to do it this way when I passed my test and thought it must be OK. Should have used my own brain. I still see plenty of people do it even though they cringe when I told them/show them what happened. I have quick reactions and always used power tools/mitre saw safely etc but this was really quick. Takes me absolutely ages to do screws, bolts up when I can only get right hand to it (more nerves in thumb than any other part so when damaged you really miss them). Still numb and hurts most of the time. I just hope reading the thread saves someonelse from doing the same as it was not a risk I conciously acknowledged at the time. Oh how I miss that thumb and nail now

Some might say you didn't

Seriously, we're not all the same. I'm fairly sure most people wouldn't be affected by these images.

I listed some effects that can happen, as that was the question.

Yeah I can PM you, anyone can PM you, but it's not my jurisdiction. I don't want to go around stepping on people's toes telling them what to do when I am only a lowly TVSF mod .

For a minute there I thought he was going to beat me with his baton while I was in handcuffs...

Fair point, doesn't stop you mentioning it to me and saying that it might cause an issue, if you had I'd likely have switched to links and the entire cheese and wine evening might have been avoided
