Right so youve done your CBT with no probs - on my DAS we did 2 whole days more on the 125 before getting on the 500. So you will get a load more practice in u turns on the 125 and build up loads more confidence in general.

Ive never really been able to completely confidently manhandle and maneoverer (damn - how do you spell that word ) but it does get easier

I hope I didnt sound patronising with the run before walk comment - I didnt mean it too - I just would hate to see anyone give up their dream

Practice Practice Practice its all it is. Don't give up, you can do it you just have to put your mind to it and think positively about it all.

My other half has an SV, she manages it fine, I've dropped her bike more than she has... Its just technique when moving it around, the more you practice the more you'll get used to it. Liz is short, and she manages to move her bike around just fine.

Like I said its just technique, if your b/f is a biker he'll know all this anyway get him to show you how he moves his own bike around.

Best thing to do is as the others have said, get your DAS done and make your mistakes on somebody else's bike. Also the instructors will give you tips about the slow speed stuff, U turns etc to help you master the technique.

If you have done your CBT you've done the hard bit, I found the bigger bikes were easier to manage. It really is just practice, keep that head up and look where you want the bike to go and you'll be fine. Dont look at the floor directly in front of the front wheel.

No I didnt take it patronising at all, I was agreeing with you, maybe the "?" made you think otherwise sorry. It's what I needed to hear, you are right, I think I got over excited and figured moving her was simple .... mmm

It's good to have this support and I really appreciate it. My fella has said the same to me and I should listen to him too, but I was so gutted this afternoon when she fell I felt silly and upset.

I will get her put away (polished) and get my lessons sorted - I WILL DO THIS

Whooaoaaa... your asking a lot of yourself to do U turns on an SV without practicing on a CB or ER 500.... you will find the steering lock on the SV is a little too tight to do a U turn comfortably in the space on the road anyway... it will do it when you walk it around with full lock.. but thats a different story to trying to control the throttle with your wrist jammed up against the tank.... also due to the seating position, takes a little getting use to as well... it can be done, as before I sat my test I was doing figure of 8's at the bottom of my street... which was a tight squeeze... but I knew if I could do it on the SV, then on an ER 5 it would be a doddle...

if you can, use their bikes... saves any minor incidents... plus the likelyhood of you ever wanting to do a u turn without touching your feet down after the test are about bugger all!

The SV is lighter than the bikes you will do your test on, but they are a hell of a lot easier to do U turns on... and its all down to weight distribution....

anyway, good luck!

Noooooooooooooooooo

It happens to everyone 'cos it's new and different. I am 6"2', weigh (embarresed coff coff) about 100kg's and am not exactly weedy (no it's not an attractive thought) and I did exactly the same as you, dropped it onto my left leg whilst moving it up the drive 2 days after I got it and again a few days later up the side of the house. It all just comes down to balance and practice. It WILL come to you, suddenly you will realise handling the bike is easy. Stick with it.

Shelley - this is gonna sound a bit pot and kettle as i've not been back on a bike since my very small off last November but you can do this don't beat yourself up about it. Fizz is right practice practice practice i didn't have any trouble with U turns but then i've not done one on an SV so i can't offer any advice there

Hey Shelley - welcome to the site and great to see you pushing ahead with it despite some setbacks.

I saw a great site the other day. It was the most mature lady I have seen on a bike ever. She was riding a BMW R1150's - a big heavy bike. She had a small stature (prob 50-60 kg) and when she and hubby (who was riding a K1200 thingy) pulled up I was wondering why she was sitting on her bike both feet on the ground - he jumped off and held it at the back whilst she put the kick stand down and tilted it over. She took the helmet off and it all became clear - Riding at that age must take a lot of confidence - over 70 I am sure. Now they were both Swiss and this was at the top of a pass around the Dolomites in Italy - hairpins all the way which I thought was even more amazing. If I am riding at that age I will be a happy man.

Anyway just thought I'd say confidence will grow on you as you learn to control it - its a mind game and in these circumstances I always think to myself what I would miss out on if I didnt push on with it.

U-turns on my sv are definitely harder than the ER5 and smaller bikes, I find the steering lock hits way too early, and so I inevitably find myself leaning too far over. Technique I have found best now is to actually sit way more upright than you think. As others have said, practice, and don't give up!
