Put key in ignition, Hold down the trip reset button, turn on ignition (but dont start) until you get 3 or 4 lines. release button, job done

How does the service indicator calculate when you need a service anyway? Does it just tot up the miles between services (i.e. you reset to zero and it keeps a count) or does it take into account anything else?

It depends, on modern cars the service plan is pre programmed into the computer by the maker and it will twll you when to do cambelt ect

I see

Maria;s car just comes up with "service now", upon which I'll get the oil and oil filter changed and the other filters changed, and the spark plugs changed if they wern't done the previous time.

I make mental note of the milage anyway, if it gets to 8000 miles since prev. service and the indicator dosnt come on, then I'll have the oil changed at least

Vw in particular have a variable service schedule. Its quite clever as it works out the type of driving done average speed etc then varies the service intervals. if you service your car on an annual basis, then you ignore the service indicator. Some VWs use Long life oil and dont get changed for 20k
