Swiss, regarding a van I found E-sixt excellent. Prices change daily but they do unlimited mileage and you can hire for one day, say 9pm til 9pm the next day. That's from Heathrow but I'm not sure about any other branches. Was about 60 quid I think for a very big LDV that could hold probably 3 or 4 bikes. Ratchets and planks not included though.
