I think there are some complicated issues here which our university and non-university intellects have failed to answer satisfactorily.
Could I propose that we therefore fall back on medieval tradition. I suggest a fight to the death between Flaming Squirrel and Spanner Man. The winner will have proven their divine inspiration and this will settle the issue once and for all.

PS To assist in funding the org I would be prepared to give up some of my valuable time to run a book on the result.

thor said it better than I did - politics in the end had nothing to do with it.

Im no economist and attended the Toothickfor University but the basics are pretty simple. The capitalist economic system relies on growth, and that applies to individual companies and whole economies alike. Thus there is a constant requirement to expand into new markets in order to exploit them and make profits.Ultimately this means exporting goods and services to bring in fresh money, just like China is doing by manufacturing everything and flogging it to the rest of the world. We used to do that, but hardly do it any more,so we are left with re-circulating money already in our economy. This means for two decades we have been living off the proceeds of selling the family silver, and or borrowing against the same silver.Just like any increasing debt, there comes a time when it has to be paid off,and that is when our economy will collapse,as it is no longer underwritten by anything of substance that we actually own or can produce. We are living off the fruits of our parents and grandparents labours, and those fruits wont last forever.
Does the UK have a trade deficit though? I don't think it does. Just because we're not producing tangible goods in high volume doesn't mean we've nothing to sell to the rest of the world. Financial services, high level technical expertise etc

When I was a nipper, the "trade figures"used to be published monthly and would make the national news.We used to run a "balence of trade"surplus every month but it inexorably got smaller, and then went into regular and expanding deficit. At first they used to qualify the ever larger deficit by saying that it was offset by "invisible earnings" like shipping and tourism, but as time went by the deficits were permanently so huge that they just stopped broadcasting the figures.I couldnt tell you what they are like now,but I would guess we are like a smaller version of the USA which runs a deficit so huge even the Chinese are worried they wont be able to afford their exports.

Oh I remember that. On the BBC 9 o'clock news. 'Here's our economics editor, Dominic Harrod.' Cue the most boring man ever seen on television.

I saw some figures last year which suggested there's a world trade deficit. Interesting concept, we must be importing from Mars.

Yup, we do indeed have a trade deficit. £5.1 billion in september 2007. Our Goods trade deficit was £7.8 billion, while our services surplus was £2.7 billion.

Oh dear. I have a Psychology degree and a M Ed - and I teach psychology.
Sometimes I never see the purpose of me either, but then I get on my bike ...
