Didn't say it's something you shouldn't do*, but hardly a priority when learning to ride and pass a test is it

Cheers Mark.

I thought it was quite mild compared to some of the ones I have seen the results of , my mate Richie had a Reverse Barrel TZR250 import and that thing ended up sounding like a tumble dryer full of nuts on one of our runs

no I've never had them as bad as that nothing a bit of honing and a new piston wouldn't sort.

Very true, not much point me learning about that when I might not be able to legally get it out the garage

Totally agree there , the TZR was a boon to me and taught me how to sort my chain out , sort the plugs , look after the brakes and bleed them , change pads etc etc without all the "complications" of an oil change . Nowadays I know a damn site more than I care to remember and it was all down to starting with the basics on a 2 Stroke 125

Just get on with it woman...

I learnt on a 2 stroke, nothing wrong with it IMHO. Taught me two things

1. I learnt to rev the engine and carry corner speed
2. I learnt to brake properly rather than being lazy and relying on engine braking.

Mine was good for 70mph, it was light and a huge amount of fun to ride. I did the first day of my DAS on my 125 and I had a lot more fun on that than the other chap with us did, he was using the riding schools 4 stroke bike and was bored sh*tless and we had to keep waiting for him as he couldnt keep up.

As your significant other will no doubt tell you, dont scrimp on two stroke oil. Use a decent quality stuff.

By the sounds of it a learner would benefit far more from having a 2 stroke, purely because you are forced to take more care with them. Sounds good to me, I highly doubt I'll be thrashing the thing anyway, as I understand it that will be YC's job once I'm finished with it

No learn to rev it and let the bike rev thrash it, its what its made for and it wont make good power if you dont.

Its hard to explain the level of satisfaction you get, by thrashing the engine and not wanting to brake because you dont want to loose momentum, you will feel like a 125 GP racer and I've never had that feeling on the bigger bikes I've ridden, its a huge amount of fun.

Well 18,000 miles from April to September in the same year on a 2 Stroke being caned everywhere did take it`s toll , Do not be frightened to open one up as Fizz has suggested , you need to keep these things on the boil and keep the momentum up , you will have fond memories to look back upon . I loved my 2 Stroke days , but as you know I am still a high mileage rider and can`t get enough of it even at the tender age of 37 .
