Wifi, do you not mean Wimax, which is a open specification technology with a wide frequency range to possibly use. So it is possible to get good speeds from wimax but the more people use it the worse it gets. Again it has the same problem as 3g/hsdpa in getting the data back from the site to a hub. However with wimax it is generally worse as each site covers a lot more people, so if they are all using it then the actual speed each user receives is greatly deteriated. Several less populated countries use it in rural areas to deliver broadband to farmers etc.

Currently in Sweden (where wimax is also deployed) they are actually rolling out HSDPA with 20meg top speeds with real user speeds of around 7meg. The r and d boys and girls are also in the last stages of producing 100meg hardware/software, with eapected user rates around 20meg. Dont expect that for at least 5 years or so.

Sorry for boring you lot I will go back to me little geek world....and then pop out on the superduke to cheer me up

Ooh HSDPA - I remember that abbreviation from the HTC Magic spec, didn't know what it meant...

for info iphone 3g is capped* at 1.4mb/s for battery life, which is a minor pants-ness. but its generally fast enough.

Edit- I tell A lie, that seems to be US provider AT&T, O2 claim they do not cap.

And all I know is I work at an airport so all day I get free wifi via The Cloud, and when ever Ive been at a out ive always had good wifi luck. (as in I'd usually be in a coffee shop / pub that has a wifi net)

It's all up and running now

Not posting from it atm cos I can access this site at work, but so far I have gone on facebook, checked my hotmail, and signed in to MSN to talk to a few of my favourite people! (all of these blocked at work!)
