New Nikon D7000 announced today - Want want want! Might have to wait until the price comes down a bit though.

Yup, seems to be a brilliant camera all around, one that might actually kill the D300s sales... just makes me even more anxious to see what the D400 will be like!

Mmmm... nice toy, especially with 1080p video, but I still fancy the low light performance of the D700.

What would give the D700 better low light performance? The iso ratings for both cameras are about the same.

Both cameras have similar numbers of megapixels, but the sensor on the D700 has twice the area, so each pixel is larger and can collect more light. There's an nice article here ( http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Ni...00/noise.shtml ) looking at actual performance of the D700 and D300.

Keith, take a look at this, specifically the comment section... some of Chase Jarvis' assistants answer a few questions regarding low light performance and one of them judges it to be almost on par with the D700, i.e., usable up to ISO 3200... I wonder if Nikon has sprinkled this sensor with some of the D3s' fairy dust. Common sense would dictate this sensor would be slightly worse than the D90 / D300, having more pixels in a slightly smaller area than the previous DX sensors, but according to the reviewers, that might not be the case. I guess we'll have to wait for the pixel peepers to start posting their results.

From the comments section, "Well, obviously it preserves lots of detail at 3200 ISO. Colour noise is awful, as you would expect from a DX camera". So I think they're comparing it with other small sensor cameras rather than the D3 or D700.

I guess in due course the pixel peepers and measurbators will look at the raw files and give us their analysis. In the meantime I'll keep shooting my D300 and wish I'd known the D700 was coming when I bought it.

Keith.
