I think some of it is that yes, but I also think that for their company car allowance it does offer the best value for money in terms of spec etc. Also theres IIRC a long lead time on anything VW / Audi at the moment, so they get their new car quicker if they go down the BMW route as well.

Don't dismiss the Fabia VRS (depends if you like the shape of the mk2 fabias)

Though I would keep running the astra since its only 3.

Nah, you don't want the Glof or the beemer. What you need is a Mitsubishi L200 Warrior. Stick some Grabber AT2's on it and, hey presto!! A vehicle for all weathers!! A few posts back, someone said they'd towed a lorry out of a car park with a Golf? Really? I don't think so. Not unless it was downhill anyway.

I've had my L200 for a few months now and, apart from horrendous fuel costs (which I knew about before I got it) I'm really chuffed with it. It'll go pretty well anywhere and will easily drag my mini digger about on the trailer. (available for hire with operator at reasonable rates!! lol)

I dragged loads of peeps out of ditches with it during the snow and it hardly slipped or spun up at all. Its a solidly built truck with a decent level of luxury - and they're a darned site less expensive than either of the cars you're looking at.

Go on Nic, you know you want one!!!!

Rubbish, they are the most popular because they are the best. I could have had a good spec 3 series or low spec 5 series but the Msport spec 1series is the best spec and value for money, tax and contributions than any other brand.

I looked at the octavia, golf, tiguan, freelander etc. The only car I would have had as an alternative was the VW scirocco but it was over a 9 month lead in time, and I couldn't handle driving a golf for that long! Was very tempted by a freelander too but the emissions made it not worth it unfortunately

If you actually go and try everything (i took 2 months trying and deciding) rather than being armchair experts and refering to badge stereotypes... Then the quality, spec and actual drive of the Msport 1 series is better than any of the competition.

L200s are not cheap though, and there not nippy and fun to drive.

We have a fleet of 100+ L200s (varying specs), pajeros etc and I wouldn't want any as an everyday car. Nightmare to park, fuel or have fun in unless you enjoy offroading (I don't as it's work lol)

MBK, sorry for the derail, but I think you've got your answer anyway.

G, how has the reliability been on the L200's at your work? My work has had two Animals and they've both been reliability nightmares, regularly blowing turbo hoses, electronics problems, etc. To be fair the guy who was driving them drives like a tit. He had the R32 I was talking about being bad in the snow, and he tries his damnedest to get the same performance from the Animal. They have both been abused and thrashed.

I have a friend who would like to buy something similar, L200, Navara or Ranger.

Our l200s live offroad and get an absolute hammering, some of our sites are 12 miles across most of which is pure mud. They are not unreliable in terms of manufacturing faults, blowing turbos etc. They often get sent away for suspension and driveshafts though. Some have been sent away for drivetrain issues which turned out to be our site staff not clearing layers and layers of mud from the arches.

They rarely do more than 5k before being swapped for new though, so less chance of seeing real issues, they are mainly poverty 'work' spec with higher lift kit, towbar etc, they don't even have aircon etc but are still about £18k I think.

they aren't a nightmare to park - you just push stuff out the way!!!
My 52 plate had 85k on it when I got it and it cost me 4 grand. I' ve had an issue with the engine management light coming on but that turned out to be a faulty sensor. I'm not after having fun in it, well, not driving fun, as its a work vehicle. If I want speed or silliness then I get the mille out!!

I think, on balance, given what I now know about L200's and Ford Rangers, I would probably go for a newer Ranger. L200's although very plush, ARE expensive to run. I wouldn't touch a Navara with a bargepole - they're even thirstier than a L200.

As Ralph said, sorry about the derail hen. Go for the Golf.
