sorry for coming in late to this one, and i will admit havn't had chance to read all the thread only bits, but defo GTI, i have a 318d m sport as a company car for about 8 weeks, i personally found it to be quite basic, i think the plastics etc felt cheap, and didn't get on with the drive of it. the biggest positive that i could give it was the size of the boot for the car was really good.
The Golf a very good friend has a 07 (i think) gt TDI and it is great, better MPG, better built, will last longer, holds value better, all together a better car IMO. also might be worth looking at A3's (sorry if it has been mentioned) we have one that the Mrs uses (i have company car) and it is great, we have the 3 door, has a big boot loads of space in the back still, has all the positives of the golf but some extra bits as well. really comfey, did a trip to the south of france with 4 in the car and all luggage, only stopped once for breakfast and then only fuel stops, sat at around 85/90 on french motorways all the way and still got only a tad under 50MPG (it is the 2.0 TDI) same lump as the gt TDI golf. great car, and a great looking car as well IMO. also holds val really well as well. + with an audi every time you take it for a service or MOT you can hope you manage to wangle an R8 for the loan car!!!
