In that case it would be written off after 3 years, so as it was valuless I would buy another one and use the old one as a server...

I get what you are saying, if you don't need a Mac, just getting one to be cool is ... well ... no so cool ... although people should spend their cash which every way they want. If a cheaper PC does it just as well, why spend extra ... But saying that MACs have no merit in front of PCs is narrow-minded and clearly shows how little experience, if any, one has on the other platform. Last edited by maxinc; 06-03-11 at 10:11 PM. |

But you don't use Photoshop or GIMP for producing page layouts for catalogues, magazines etc. I used to work at a newspaper and macs were used for all the design elements and page planning (unfortunately - I hate them personally but had to use them). The sales departments however, used pc's. All on the same network, all talking to each other, with no problems that I knew of. |

![]() The problem is (as I see it) that a huge number of computer users are scared of change. The GF won't use OpenOffice(LibreOffice) because it isn't Excel/Word which is what she is used to - the app will do everything that she needs, and it's a fairly seemless change, but it is not in her comfort zone. Same for the poster chatting about Mac's photo capabilities - a well specced PC laptop will do everything they need just as well and for a similar ROI, but it is not in their comfort zone. I think Macs have a lot going for them - they package them well for those users who don't want to be overburdened with choice of hardware or software; but by the same token it counts against Mac for those users who want some freedom to do what they will with the hardware and OS they have paid for. PC hardware, running Windoze, Linux, or even OS2, is generally cheaper on a like-for-like capability basis, but tends not to be quite so aesthetic. Personally, the GUI on recent GNOME or KDE distros is as least as good as Mac and better than Windows 7. At the end of the day, for me, they are just tools and I don't need cases and monitors to be pretty. Others have different feelings (evidently ![]() |

I used every single release of Windows starting with 3.0 and I was convinced I will never need a Mac to work. Too much training, effort and money I thought would be involved and I just couldn't justify it. That was until I was "forced" to get a Mac for a specific project. Hated it's guts for 2 weeks as nothing was reacting the way I expected (the windows way). That quickly changed after I decided to follow a few "from PC to MAC" tutorials and discovered what the hype was all about. Haven't invested significant money in PCs ever since. I still use PCs, and I think the W7 is excellent but when it comes to Macs, just like you said, you would have to overcome your fears to really enjoy them and discover what they truly are. Its also why I dont like Steam for game distribution. The way that Apple try to control how you work, makning it easier to just go with their flow is insidious. If you support those kind of business models, then EVERYONE goes down that route and suddenly NOONE has any choice any more. It will invalidate your warranty in the US if you Jailbreak your iThing (or so I read), how long till the Big Jobs persuades Europe that this is a valid thing. THIS is my main Apple objection, that they attract the Sheeple (the ones who buy it for fashion reasons), I will concede that there ARE times when the iThing MAY be the best option. Look at the number of threads on here looking to find out how to do VERY basic things on iThing devices, that on my non-iThing devices are just drag and drop, and my Hardware/Software NEVER tried to delete or modify anything without ME telling it to.
