bummer of a day, but good to see that you seem to have a sense of humour about it all! (very entertaining read BTW!)

Why did you have to take bike back to Ireland? Then fly back??

(Must've missed that point somewhere)!

I live near the junction you broke down on! Luton.. Horrible roadworks!

Can't really blame the bike ... yet! This was it's first proper run out it had; until Wednesday of last week it had been stood up for about 9 months. With the benefit of hindsight, I ought to have taken it out for a proper test before embarking on a journey of this length. Gotta say though, the 49 miles that I had covered before it cut out were great!
That Aprilia 1000cc set up is well known for eating batteries. Basically, as long as the battery is 100% tip top, then it's fine, anything else and it can let you down Martini style (anytime, anyplace, anywhere). Also, the starter switch is crap and needs to be sprayed with WD40 on a monthly basis.

Get the biggest battery you can physically fit into the battery bay - Mecedes do a 16Ah unit that is used to provide the power for the electronics on their big V12 engines (the car also has a much bigger unit for the starter motor). It amazingly fits into the battery bay and costs about £75. That seemed to solve my problems (and the switch).

Feel sorry for you Doug, but at least you know have e very good reason to go to Ireland

.

The sidestand tang is a work of art! The angle of the tang, the length of it's projection....it's just so....in keeping with an Italian bike! You Mr Squid are a welding god. I shall recommend you to all my friends (except Swiss, cos he thinks you're s***e at welding!)

What would he have advised for a front wheel punture? Wheelie all the way to Belfast?

Too kind, I'm glad it didn't complete your misery by snapping again - that would have been all you needed .

1) I guarantee all the welds that I get paid for don't break.
2) Swiss is from Yorkshire.

See any connection there?
