For my ZX9 I made a 'special tool' out of some shelving bracket, then held the top of it with a mole-grip.
These days, tend to just use an air/electric impact wrench. |

When I did the 2nd fork leg, the first thing I did once I had take the fork leg off the bike was to undo the damper rod bolt. It was much easier that way. I also put the fork leg into a vice ( gripping the caliper mount points ) and that helped to.
If your going to do this be careful that you dont damage the caliper mount points though.
