Or you could just soak the whole bike like I do, several coats a few weeks apart builds up a nice protective coat.
I reckon by february my number plate will be matt black too! (my rearsets already are ) This is at about 250 miles a week, so far the finish is fine under the layers of grime

Also mmmmmm ACF50 smoke...

I think I will be doing about 220 miles on average per week, hence the ACF-50 route. So, once the can arives I will be sat with a paintbrush in the garage all day long!!!! nice.I don't have a problem with doing the job, just a bit apprehensive about removing panels and opening bits up to then do it. But guess I need to learn at some point.

Just to add my 2p . Mostly a repeat of other peoples posts.

I didn't bother with the paint brush, just sprayed it on. Trying to do all the fiddly bits round the shock by hand just seem like making work for yourself. It is like a thick shaving foam, nothing like WD40. I warmed the can up in a bowl of hot water first too, and gave it a damm good shaking. A few seconds after it goes on, the foam turns to oily film and creeps into place.

It does creep very well mind. So be extra careful near the brakes. This is the only bit where I applied it by hand. Once again, it will creep if you put on too much too near.

Have a clean rag handy to mop up and re-use the excess as you put it on.

I deliberately did the switch gear. Inside the kill switch headlight switch etc. Wipe off the excess before you go out. It is quite slippy.

Areas that get the worst of the road spray should probably have been done mid way through winter. But I didn't. Didn't wash it at all either. Results here.

Halfway through winter I had to take the tank off. The underside of it had some small rust streaking around the welds. So I sprayed this too. Might be worth doing if it's easy enough on the SV.

About time: doesn't seem like a day's work to me, unless you're very slow at taking panels off.

I took it for a quick shakedown run after I'd put it on. Rode up to the Shopping Mall at Cribbs and parked on the pavement in front of the doors as usual. As I walked away there were clouds of acrid smoke rising up from it. I just hurried away quicker.

Cheers All,

So aside from under the tank, all the wiring, under the pillion seat, under the fairing is there any other parts that I need to remove?

Don't do the exhaust, it won't cause any harm but it just burns off and leaves an ugly residue. I use a paraffin gun, i bought the ACF in a bottle not a can, and it sprays on in a fine mist which gets everwhere.

ahhh i was going to start a thread like this, so nice on drew

northwind would you recommend that method then? of a bottle with gun and not a can? does it not matter that the stuff is intended to foam on and then run in? or is your way more effective?

Think i will order myself a can this week and get it done

i'm also intrigued as to what this smell is like !

I'd say so, it seems to give a more complete coverage, gets in places you can't reach easily otherwise, and it's very fast. But it makes it hard to protect the brakes, since it's quite indiscriminate. Nothing wrong with using the cans either, but it was cheap in the bottle.

Northwind. Where do you get the bottle from as I can only find cans on internet so far.
