If Toseland and 3-times-running WTCC champ Andy Priaulx aren't firm contenders I'll lose the last shred of respect I had remaining for this farce of an award.

It's whittled down to 10 by a panel of judges and then you get to vote on the night for one of the 10.
Would dearly like to see JT up there but he won't be. I even voiced my opinion on the BBC's 606 site, not that I think it will make any difference.

The whole SPOTY thing is a joke IMO, motorsport in general isn't given the press space it deserves, F1 has been a slight exception to that rule this year with the conterversy of the spygate saga and the intro of LH into the fold, however in general it just doesn't get the coverage. Without coverage the average Joe won't have even heard of JT or even Andy Priaulx, the World Touring Car Champion, whom just happens to be a Brit.

SPOTY! How is anyone supposed to make an informed choice when the media are intent on only covering a small handful of the many great sports and sports persons this country has to offer.

I'm slightly bias toward motorsport as this is what I enjoy but there are many others which don't get represented.

I see I've prattled on a bit but it just really bugs me!

Well, it won't be Frank Lampard

Got to say that I agree with Hovis et al about Joe Calzaghi.............. World Champ for years and now holder of all 4 World Titles. Fantastic achievement and will be getting my vote.

Lewis hamilton with win it one year, but not this (I hope). LH is on Top Gear this week as "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" where's he's trying to beat The Stig's lap record. Should be great telly

I agree with the book thing, its a joke!

LH isnt a sports 'personality' as far as i know he hasnt done much to show any personality really! Just a joke if he wins. It is a sports popularity conterst imo!

JT should win as he has a good personality and is a great champ, one that entertains and just gives the fans a lot to cheer about i mean look at brandhatch! WOW what a day!

I dont think it even made the news that he was the new champ you know! BBC are jokers... i mean golf, who the hell wants to know about some fat old man who rides a cart around a field with holes it it? I dont men its a bad sport, its pretty good to play im guessing but it is hardly entertaining!

Sigh. I put this on 606 too...

I think it'll be Hamilton. I agree JT should be on the list, Minority Sports have no chance in this kind of thing. Another world champion theres no mention of is Victoria Pendleton. 3 Gold medals in this years world cycling track championships and not one mention in the mainstream press and she'd make good televisual viewing to IMHO.

I think the true candidates from the British sporting ranks are this year very limited. There are not many out there who have excelled or captivated people. Unfortunately there are very deserving individuals but unless their achievements spill over and gain the interest of non sporting viewers, then they are likely to be overlooked.

Football over the last 12 months has been full of more politics than uplifting performances and I think that England's non qualification for Euro 2008 just about nipped in the bud the chances of any footballer.

Boxing is very much non PC these days and boxers receiving the award are less likely in the future.

Paula Radcliffe has performed brilliantly for many years against the best in the world, a very self effacing lady and true inspiration.

Being a big rugby fan I thought that Jason Robinson was the 1 shining light throughout England's attempt to retain their world crown. There was excitement in the ground and in homes and bars every time the ball got to him. He laid it on the line and emerged battered and bruised but a true sporting hero.

He additionally gets my vote as for years he has delivered hot food and blankets to the homeless in Manchester, when many other top sporting personalities would have been out clubbing.

It is this sort of thing that the personality should be about!
