It also seems, that no matter how much we politely hint, correct posts and generally take the pi$$, people who post in "txt spk" (you know who you are) never seem to get the hint!

my daughter sends text full of that stuff and it takes me ages to read her texts. i assumed it was because i was old - obviously not on my own

i would do this, but half the time there just isn't the space in the message and being a bit of a tight git i like to keep it to one message
