IMO don't take the **** in sleepy villages or ride at excessive speeds on the autoroutes and you will be fine. Sure there's a good chance you'll get away with it, but if you're caught then you'll be in a world of ****, especially if you're English.

When i'm home, i often ride fast throughout the countryside/twisties without any hassle.

There is no truth to this rumour, as i have said elsewhere, the flix here tend to put up a speed trap just a couple of k from the next peage , you dont see it but the flix are waiting at the peage with open arms. The calais peage is famous for this
