This might take loads of energy but plants split water all the time! Plants use light energy to split water into protons (hydrogen ions ) and water. There is quite a lot of research going on into making synthetic photosynthetic systems to generate hydrogen using light energy. This is pretty exciting I think. It's a long way off but could be an energy option.
Something else exciting is an algae called Chlamydomonas. If you starve them of Sulphur then they start making hydrogen gas which could potentially be used to power our bikes. (although someone needs to find a way of containing the stuff in the bike so that it doesn't occupy a massive volume) I don't buy the website's claims though. mary |
