General opinion/experience seems to be that the SV engine very rarely requires shims and needing anything at 20000 miles would be most unusual.

Rarely, but they do on occasion, mels did, mine didn't, dizzyblondes did at 15k, didn't at 30k.
That was on the exhaust valves all round IIRC.

My old sv had done 33k miles when it was written off, and my current one is on 33k miles, both ran/run really well.
