Following on from the earlier comments about the fishing rod through the letter box stunt.
1 - don't leave your keys in the hall just inside the door 2 - the next place the burglars will look is (wait for it) the drawer in the kitchen. Go on, where are your keys? 3 - I have all my keys in a plastic box which I take upstairs when I go to bed, it's just routine now. 4 - a cheap and simple trick you can do on some modern cars is fit a switch on the dashboard which is a genuine OE switch (often only a few quid from the dealers) so looks just like the others, and switches the fuel pump relay feed. They tend not to look at the dash when trying to find "hidden" switches. If you want to get more involved you can also wire it to the horn when in the "off" position. A few years ago when car security started getting better, there was a scam at a dealership where a mechanic would copy the car's key and tape the copy under the driver's seat, reachable from through a broken side glass. The car would then disappear from the owner's driveway a couple of weeks later, with just some broken glass to show.

Also not needing a license, pay in cash and there's no record that you own one.

To be honest I'd sooner them find my keys easily rather than them come upstairs & get me to show them where they are/hand them over. I think this would be a more dangerous situation.
