My brother-in-law has a 2001 Astra "Eco4" which was a special edition Vauxhall produced as the most economical Astra - it has really tall tires and a ridiculously long 5th gear etc - anyway he gets 65-70mpg from it!! Dull as they come but a great car for the purpose...

Ford Galaxy/C-Max/S-max all pretty good family cars. Drive well too.

How about a Honda Civic? Loads of space inside them especially in the rear.

I have a 2.0 TDIC Focus C-Max which is nice to drive but a little thirsty around town i find. Try a 1.6 TDCI as they will give more mpg.

I did 98k in my 02 2.0 diesel and never got less than 50mpg cheap and cheerful on fuel, repairs, tax & insurance.Plenty of room ok for practicality but not the best drivers car in the world. Would I have another one?---30k miles a year and costs = yes, looks = no

For that budget you could get a nice diesel Passat

I have the normal focus 1.6TDCI and i cannot praise it enough. It does great MPG (50) it is roomy enough for my whole family (2 kids, 4 and 8 ) and when you need to transport stuff the seats fold down to give lots of room. The other cool thing is that it doesnt feel that under powered and with the focus handling you can still have fun on those A roads when you fel like it.
