I spent a chunk of my childhood on a couple of council estates and although I did find a fair few nice people there were always a fair few nasty ones about. I used to have next door neighbours who kept a menagerie of ferrets and mutts, as well as others with dogs that howled all day 'cos they were never home.
![]() It's a shame they get such a bad name but they get it for a reason at the end of the day, majority rules and so on and so forth. There will always be a bunch of people determined to ruin it for others, but then that's bound to happen anywhere I guess. Given the option I would rather camp out than live on one again, it saddens me to say. |

When i was born my parents lived in what is now a really rough area of halifax, they owned their house and decided to move when I was five, due to the demise of the area, they took a gamble and bought a new plot in what is now one of the most desireable areas of Halifax My parents did this so that they could raise me and any future children away from what turned out to be a notorious area(ever heard of 'The Ridings' School in Hx..look it up it may give you an idea) My parents live still in that house after 28 years, and we as children have benefitted from their decision. Even if sometimes we may have been the Dingles of the suburb. As we were probably one of the families that were least well off. Its amazing that now that i have children of my own am faced with the same dilema. Is history repeating itself? Incidently my brother lives in Buttershaw Bradford that has a huge chav label for years, his house suited him and the missus perfectly, until they too had their first child. Now they don't think the area is good enough to raise their son in Life is what you make it, we all have to start somewhere, some of us stay there and live there because we can't make a go of something, or don't want to. Some of us decide to take a gamble and jump ship before it gets bad, or have a means to get higher up the ladder. Your home is your palace, sometimes the world outside just carries on without bothering you and sometimes when you close the curtains, some ar$$e breaches your peace....thats when its time to go to pastures new......but never forget where you came from!

Don't get me wrong, as there will be decent folk living there. Just seems the kids of the area are running amock out of boredom. |

I live about a mile from where I was brought up. It was a nice village until they create central Lancashire new town and built a huge council estate called Clayton Brook.
They then populate it with scum that other areas want rid off. nice new houses for them to wreck and deal drugs from. After 30 years it has really cleaned up its act. However, the village centre is still no go. the pub is still known as the flying bottle etc. There is still a lot of scum there. However they seem to have a least put the decent people on the quiet cul de sac's with no reason for the scum to enter. OK, I am a bit of a snob. However, my wife grew up in a council flat in Salford. She was living in a council house when I met her. Just because you have lived in social housing does not make you an anti social, thug. However, there does seem to be a minority everywhere (posh housing or run down council estates) who seem to think they have the right to do whatever they want and to hell with everyone who has to live with them. Yes there is definitely more than an element of truth in the TV show shameless.

There`s good and bad places to live everywhere..... i live in a more "affluent" suburb of Liverpool but that`s not to say that we don`t have crime here cos we do. Friday and Saturday nights usually means some sort of trouble in the local pubs and there`s a high rate of car theft etc.
Ed you should be fine with your bike where you work |

I am thinking of moving to Pall Mall. Right by where the Audi dealer used to be. The parking there is actually secure! |
