Rather than Ambleside, I'd go to Keswick. More watering holes and good food which is something which I found scarce around Windermere.

Well, after all that, we didn't end up camping - we managed to get a cottage in Elterwater for the weekend, right next door to the pub!!

does anyone know what the campsite is like at Wastdale Head? Rode into the valley on Monday not realising its a no through route. Looks a canny pub though

its a national trust one

no more than four in a group and its family orientated.

the pub serves nice meals on the tdm club tour in 2006 we ate there and the nosh is great.
