I think you're right about the oil cooler needing more volume to fill.

My 99 - 05 Haynes says the same as above ^. (Doesn't mention if for curvy/pointy at all though).

My K5 manual only shows 2300ml oil, 2700ml for oil & filter. (Doesn't mention overhaul)
The '03 PDF Service Manual (off the .org) says the same as my K5 manual ^, but also mentions an 'overhaul' as 3100ml.

I've just had a look in the shed and i've got 1300ml left of Shell VSX 10w 40. Although I used the same guage on the container to fill the bike with 2.7L bit by bit, then checked it was then full at the sight glass.

I remember having to tilt the bike over repeatedly for ages after removing the filter to get all the oil.
