Both really, the stator provides AC 3ph, which gets recitified and regulated to 14vDCish, this charges the battery and runs the bike.
HOWEVER... the feed from the reg rec alone is way too lumpy to actually make anything work at low rpm, hence you need a battery, I believe that the battery acts as a damper on the system and smooths out the current a little. This is all rough guesses, but a curvy won't tick over without a battery connected to stock wiring.

but i thought the spark plug system was all on the other side of the reg/rec? with the power for the ignition system taken directly off the stator? will have to have a look at the wiring diagrams when i get back home now ![]()

No not on the SV
Take's the switched ignition live, through "ignition" fuse, to killswitch, multi-relay for sidestand, then that live powers both coils and igniter box. Tis the same regulated voltage as rest of the electrics. Perhaps you're thinking of the pulse coil... that is just a signal to the ignitor unit, it's not actually a generator (well, it is, but not enough to fire plugs)
