Depends on how hard you rub and how long the movie is, five minutes vigorous should do a hours movie...

Of course you also need to factor in the certification, the frequency of the drive, and just how hard it was in the first place!

Seconded.

Handbrake is what most people use for converting movies for iTunes / iPods / iPhones. It works very well and, as Luke says, is free.
