Avira is very good (http://free-av.com/), coupled with Kaspersky & Panda online scans they will catch most. A lot better than AVG's detection rate.
HTH

Yeah, but when it wasn't bloated, it also wasn't very secure.

The other solutions about on a par with ZoneAlarm Pro's security, but not as bloated are:
- Comodo,
- Ashampoo,
- PC Tools (Free),
- Online Armour.

As above, AVG will be more than adequate for anti-virus protection.

This is true, but if users did not just click on everything they see then it would be fine.

Ive had an XP install on my home computer for 3yrs, only using my router firewall and windows firewall, using good judgement when browsing sites and so far the computer has been fine.

Linux/Unix, or variants thereof.

HTH.

Nah, seriously, at work, we rely heavily on Sophos. IMO, it's an over-priced pile of poo. But I don't pay the bills.

Interesting fact-et, Sophos can be tricked into becoming a virus itself, and spreading around a network in that state. When it does this, it also treats all other files on the computer as a virus, and as such, deletes them!!

That's not the only issue with ZA-Pro. I remember a good few years ago, a friend asked me to do some intrusion testing (they were using ZA-Pro as the main defence).

Within 10mins, I'd gained access to shared drives.

Note: I'm not claiming ZA-Pro is that crap now. I haven't tested it in a long while (and TBH, I'm probably wildly out of date with techniques).

I've got AVG back on mine, because of a problem with kaspersky following a reinstall... I'm all for free stuff but the performance hit is pretty intrusive, and it's fairly slow as well. It never used to bother me til I tried something better, but now I have and it's really irritating.
