Bypass the thing, they're only good for leaving you stranded somewhere wet and cold anyway...

Stick a paperclip in the end of the connector then blob the end with silicon

You can just use a bit of wire to go from one side of the connector to the other, I've used about an inch of multi-core electrical cable before.

Personally I think it's worth using the safety cutouts, and if they go wrong about 6 inches of insulating tape and an inch of wire has you on your way
