I've got 7x5. Never had a problem. See loads around with much smaller.

i was speaking to a couple of traffic officers. They appeared to be quite decent people, considering we were all chatting standing next to someones bike, he was fond of burnouts and had the thread showing, his plate was like G's. Neither of the copper's were interested in giving a ticket. I asked one what his bug bear was with motorcyclists, what would get you pulled.
His number 1 answer was an illegal plate - not saying that he stops every single rider with an illegal plate, it's just that's what would first draw his attention to you.
I'm beginning to think if it's worth it

At the moment we can get away with using them as number-plates as long as they are reasonable - ie Cops etc can read them from 20m

However with the crackdown on plates having to have the right details etc, I can see the law cracking down harder.

So my thought at the moment are "is it worth it".

I am willing to take a risk when I am gambling on whether a cop is going to be in a good mood or not, but if ALL cops are on the lookout.....

Who's to say they wont run image analysis software on ALL plates going through video cameras looking for the standard marking (so text at the bottom left) or actually looking for illegal characteristics and flag those up -
what new law is this?? i think mine is seriously too small then too, mayb have to think about goin back to old one too. well if i ever get the dam thing off the drive???? making a great garden ornament at the moment!

There's a new law coming into force on 1 November that prohibits the manufacture of "show" plates. Most manufacturers will move offshore or find another way around it, but there's a lot of speculation that the police will be a firmer on smaller plates once the law comes into effect.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts/views. I've gone for a 7.5x5.5 Mal number. Won't result in too many questionable glances I hope.

My mate Grizzly Adams kept getting pulled by plod in Bath with his small plate, so went for a 12" x 9" plate with suitably large type.

He got pulled evn more often with that plate 'cos it was TOO big!

He does ride bright yellow VFR750 rat though...

7x5 at moment cos that is the exact distance needed to cover the tailtidy bracket and it looks neater not showing any black metal. Had a 6x4 on my 650 and have had no problems with either, including many trips into North Wales.
