The price thing is a lottery though. Unfortunately in Macc we only have 1 supermarket petrol station (Tesco) and the rest are Shell, Esso and Total.

A few weeks ago when the prices were dropping it was 109.9 a litre at Macc Tesco and in Northwich where my parents live it was 104.9. The manager at Macc Tesco forecourt admitted their prices were higher than the nearest other stores cos there was no competition. She was telling this to an irate customer who was 'having a go' at the prices whilst i was in the queue.

Funniest bit was when she said, 'You can get 5p a litre off when you spend £50 or more in store', to which the guy said 'That's great, but I won't be shopping or buying petrol from you f@cking shysters again'. I was creasing up at this point inside my helmet!

To me thats sounds like an ideal excuse to nip across the A537 to buxton The petrol station at the buxton end is always the cheapest in the area........nice road as well apparently

Interesting graph G, pity it doesn't go past April 2008! So it very, very roughly follows that petrol goes up with the price of oil, but see oddities like at the beginning where the price of petrol rises sharply in contrast to the slow rise of the price of oil.

but Asda (I went today) is still 102.9 whereas the shell 100yards away is 101.9. So went back to the shell.

I guess they only cut the price where they feel they have to.

My mate sat next to me just told me he fills his tank every 100 miles.

He's filled it twice so far this year.

Going by that graph it looks like it was about 94p at the same barrel price point. Theres no doubt that the companies wont look to reward the customers with the same reductions that they have at the bulk purchase (likewise the oil co's giving it to the suppliers) but fortunately the supermarkets drive the price down in a price war. I doubt BP or Esso would bother doing the same.

We need some alternative fuel that will increase competition with oil. Its a bit worrying that after probably more than 30 years of looking for a solution, we still havent come up with it.

You think there is no alternative? of course there is, but it will be in some batman style completely secret complex somewhere.

Why would car companies and BP etc release something that only reduces the value of something they already have........but at the same time they wont sit there with a product that will inevitably run without having a backup.

When it becomes necessary to release a new product to open up new profit streams I'm sure they will.

Rumor has it once upon a time audi produced a diesel that did 130mpg, BP paid them not to release it or something like that.
