I LOVED my Alfa 156 even with its Selespeed issues. I still maintain that Selespeed is the best way to drive a car. Control of gears...no clutch. Didnt mind traffic jams with that car.

I know what the problem is, I have the solution and the source of the parts, but not the technical ability or even an idea of when to start.

So I asked the missus what day I can have it next week to take it to a local garage and get him to sort it, to which I was told that I couldn't as she needs it......I explained that the more she drives it the more risk of totally knackering the gearbox, but to no avail. Back to another thread I give up.....

Looks like it will be me swearing and mainly up to my elbows in grease this weekend without a clue of what I'm doing.

Quiff where's a pic of your car then?

The inside of a alfa gearbox is like a woman's mind. . . . nobody is quite sure whats going on inside there. . . . not even them.

(no offence to the .org ladies)

seriously though, gearboxes are complex bits of kit with lots of potential for mistakes, probably best left to the experts this one.

Time to buy her one of those pedal go-karts as she's obviously too stupid to own anything with an engine

Actually the gearbox's in Alfa's are usually pretty sturdy and robust. Selespeed Gearboxs have a bad reputation and even manual Alfa owners scoff at the Selespeed gearbox saying they are carp when in actual fact the 5speed Gearboxes in all 156's and 147's are the same.

The selespeed reliability issues are from the mechanism that actually goes through the process of changing the gears. There are so many things that could go wrong and when they do will make the car undriveable.

Viney whats the DSG gearbox. How does it work?
