BBC4 seemed to be making a steam train night of it last night so I sat down and watched. The point is, I guess that there are plenty of trains being restored, but you need a decent starting point. Aside from 70-something trains marked for saving by BR, most of the restorations started life in the Barry scrap yard. The owner worked out that people would pay to take them away, and he didn't have to cut them up. This meant that unless this particular type of train ended up dumped in one small corner of Wales, we don't have one to restore.

I think it's a rather different endeavour to build one from scratch and people got behind it in a different way, they collected the money themselves so it's unlikely they stole the restoration money from anyone else

Plus I want a go.

There is something about steam trains that brings out the little boy in all blokes i thought. It also helps the male bonding process between son and other half. Mutual interest in big trains builds bridges

Howarth steam line. Even I enjoyed it

Yep he's at No. 2

I think in some respects he was right, but they shouldnt have ripped up the track, demonlished the old stations, they should have left them there and they could have been recommisioned, but the ripped down the infrastructure and theres no way to put it back now.

Also IIRC alot of his sums were skewed and the guy who put Beeching where he did was in the pocket of the UK's biggest provider of Tarmac...

The BBC4 Program that Dizzyblonde refered to was very interesting and explained it all much better than I can.
