Cheers, that's the sort of info I was after. Guess I will have to either locate the CD with the full instructions on, which is in a box.... somewhere.... either in our house or the in laws.

Just go on the manufacturers website - it will probably have a PDF you can download and read on your 'puter

I had a look at that, doesn't make it clear though, and the hard copy manual I have that it the size of a phone directory only shows basic set up and operation in approx 450 different languages. I've emailed them to ask instead.... Worst case scenario is that I try it, doesn't work, so I have to buy a switch and a couple of extra optical cables so no biggy, just trying to save time and effort.

I'm currently looking at upgrading the old DVD & VCR to a combi, with upscaling.

Question is, what is the best solution to run surround sound from the Sky box & DVD? Am I correct in thinking that if I ran HDMI connections from both to the TV, then connected the optical out to the surround system (via an optical/coaxial converter) that I would receive 5.1 output, or would that not work?

And before it is suggested, upgrading the AV reciever to one with multiple digital inputs isn't an option at the moment...
If its like my LG tv then it will have an Opticatl output. So run all the units into the TV using HDMI then optical out through a converter to Coaxial into your bose system and all should work fine. Its what i should have done, but i got all excited and bought a load of cables before i realised it could do that. Oh, and you will need to select audio output (Dolby Digital) in the screens menu system. Job done.

Mine's an LG too Viney, and also has an Optical output. Fingers crossed that will work then. It's the cable buying bit I'm trying to avoid, been there done that before, like you!

I hear ya. However i was NOT going to pay £60 for a cable (knowing what i do and that pretty much they are stupidly over priced) so i bought my stuff from here and here

The HDMI cables from HDMIUK (Premium brand, not thier top ones) are brilliant and very good quality (for the small price)

Worth checking out.

Cheers, v useful. Whilst I was only looking at about £20 a cable, that will save me a few quid.

I was buying 5m HDMI cables and they were about £60+ from the local retailers. Small ones are about £6 on there.

Don 't think I'd need over a metre tbh, maybe even 0.5m per go. Will have to check that before I order though.

The cost of some of these cables is atrocious , I used to read What Hi-Fi and these people swore they could tell the teeny tiniest difference in sound quality between a £15 and a £60 cable . I ride a bloody SV with a Scorpion Street Extreme with the baffle out .......... I wouldn`t know if Metallica was playing next door , never mind what cables they were using
