I'm not familiar with this motor, but I was a 2 stroke fan for many years. Have a look in the alternator/generator side casing for oil mist which would indicate leaking crank seal; which lets oil out and air in. What does the plug look like?

Plug looks oily when it dies.

It kinda has the symptoms of a blocked pilot, but the carb has been cleared out a few times and you can see the passageways for idle are clear. Ticks over alright on the choke.

If it's not too much grief to do, then I would have a look behind the case for oil mist - if only to completely rule it out. Does sound very much like minor air leak or blocked pilot jet. Plug is probably only wet/oily because you have left it on choke a lot because it wont tick over without it.

Well the inside of the airbox had a fine coating of sand! Air filter looked like a dead rat.

Also all chassis bearings are either dry or siezed. The wheel bearings are square. Taking a spanner to this bike is like a can of worms.

F##kin french.

Oh yeah also it appears you need to take the motor out to do the swingarm bearings... WTF?

It's my step brothers, but it is in my garage. So might as well be mine.

It's scarily lighter than my (stone age!) montesa 349, and the modern stuff is even lighter still.
