Cheers, i'll take it for a long ride today, then see if the residue can be "washed off" with the oil - this sounds pretty likely to be honest, i just hadn't thought of it - BigApe it doesn't look to me like the glass is damaged, just like it's got a residue on the inside. I can check the oil if i can get it clear, i've not had a problem acutally carrying out the checks the last few years - thought i might have permantly discoloured the glass (by getting it too hot or something, i hadn't really thought it through i must admit...) and would need to come up with an alternative method of checking the oil level. Cheers for the help again all, i'll have a look tonight and see what can be done.

My K6 has had exactly the same issues.
White mayo under the filler cap, and white smoke until it warms up properly, then clear. As stated above, cold engine, take the radiator cap off. Do you have mayo there? If not, it's simply condensation build up (like mine). I've treated mine to two oil changes in the last week - one to put fresh oil in & draw the mayo out, the other a more permanent solution. Today, I took it for a 150mile (ish) ride, and there's still white in the sight glass - but it's nothing I'm concerned about, it'll go in time. |

I have a K7 650s with 5750 miles on the clock - it had fresh oil around 1250 miles ago and I get the white stuff in the sight glass also.
I have had the bike from new and never had any issues with running at all but I have noticed a build up of mayo just inside the engine casing when you remove the oil filler cap. The oil itself is dark brown when I do the level check and it hasn't budged from the upper level since the oil change. As I said, the bike has never missed a beat but I am a little concerned about the mayo. Just for the record, I use the bike daily for a 24 mile round commute to work and I've not gone on a decent length ride for months so I don't know whether it just needs a long journey...? D |

Went for a bit of a blast yesterday, got it nice and warm and tilted it over, washed the residue of the window nicely, cheers for the tips guys - my faith in humanity, my bike, and the interconnectedness of everything has been restored

As per Shao's post - I went for a 2 hour ride today and the gunk has completely dissapeared, no white deposits whatsoever!!
![]() It must be due to regular short journeys as mentioned above - a good blast now and again seems to solve the problem...nice! D |

In a similar vein to this thread, but mainly to save me starting another one.
Since I've had my bike, when the bike is cold there is no oil visible in the sight glass, but if I ride it for 10mins and check again they oil level goes to just below the F line. Is this normal? I'm always unsure if I need oil or not! It has been this way since before first service! |

As Plowsie said I think it's something to do with water mixing with the oil.
I had the same problem with my DT. There was a breather hole at the top of the oil tank and everytime I washed it water would get in there. Whenever I changed the oil it was always a nice creamy white/grey colour |

No thats not normal. With the bike upright and on level ground the oil should be visible between the lines hot or cold. Are you sure you are doing it right?
