Hello Ollie, if the sessions leading to your test were the only time you sat on a 500cc or bigger and if in fact you have not ridden any motorbike since you passed your test a year ago then I would recommend a minimum of one refresher session with an instructor. I passed mine on a Kawasaki ER-5 and bought my SV one week later and still it took me a while to get used to it. The jump from the ER-5 to the SV felt nearly as big as the one from the 125cc to the 500cc. But everybody is different so you might be OK.

Hi
when i passed my test i bought my SV and went to pick it up, i had never rode a bike biger than the 500 i used for my DAS, it was very different, i was scared and rode at a very low speed... what i did and would recommend is where you pick the bike up if its near an industrial estate type thing stay in it going round and round until you are ready to head out, thats what i did, my suggestion is that if you have to collect from a busy high street get it delivered, i think for me if i had of picked it up at a 'busy spot' i would have been distracted... and and it was much more powerful than the 500 so dont rip your wrist back... enjoy.. richie |

Cheers folks,
You advice is very much appreciated, I had thought about getting a refresher lesson but I definately will do now. Its at the quiet end of nottingham so shouldt be too bad, I may find a quiet country way to get back home, via an industrial estate! |

I passed my test and then bought the SV as my first bike. I was afraid to get it out of the showroom as I dreamt that I'd drop it riding out so asked m friend to meet me there so that he could get it home for me and I drive his car behind him! I went early and he hadn't arrived yet. When I told the salesman why I didn't want to ride the bike home he said, "what are you afraid of this is such a good handling bike" whilst he got on it and put up the side stand, he then jumped off it again forgetting to put the sidestand back on and nearly fell with the bike on top of him! I sprained my back to hold the bike from falling.

When I picked up my bike I got my other half to follow me home in the car so that I knew that I wouldnt have to worry about having an impatient tw*t behind me.

Do you know any other experienced bikers? if so ask one to go with you, when i first got on my sv my dad followed me to make sure i could cope with it and i was doing every thing right, luckily i did unlike the first time i got on my 125 and managed to sit it up on the back wheel across 2 lanes (dont let that put you off though) think i was still thinking it was a twist and go fifty oops
