Well apart from you not getting a receipt for the thing from a bloke whose willing to defraud the vatman These people are the very devil incarnate...or is that invannate?
You will end up with not much evidence you gave him any money. When the poo hits the fan he could even say you hadnt paid him yet; get a receipt of some desription or take someone who can be a witness to the dosh being swapped at least.
Tis true tho that the VAT is not your problem.....

I'll certainly get a receipt. And one that he signs stating he is sole owner, vehicle not subject to outstanding finance or hire purchase, and get him to declare all known problems with the vehicle in writing too.
However, I've just got that feeling I might walk away from this one.

"I won't charge you the VAT" suggests to me that he's just volunteered to knock that amount off the price to sweeten the deal.

Hey mate, i'm being a bit tounge in cheek about this. I'm no fan of the VAT system. But if I was selling a van and planning to defraud the VAT man I wouldnt be handing out receipts for deffo. So you hand over a wad of cash for a van with no receipt just to save 15%? I wouldnt bother meself.

Nope, never discussed. He was offering a buy it now price. He now has some bidders, so he'll probably not be making the offer now anyway.
All things considered, I'm going to look elsewhere.

im my experience commercial vans/trucks will either be advertised at something what they believe is market value and advertise no VAT, or 15% less (to look more attractive) and add VAT after. the sale price will be the same, its just how they advertise it. from your other thread i guess its a hilux or similar, buying it for a private vehicle this has no real effect on you.

doubt they are trying to fraud anyone, just wording the advertising in a particular way. im sure they will still do a receipt.
