Ask them to "fit it in".The first service only takes about half an hour, and Im sure they could do you a favour if they wanted your custom in the future???

if they can't fit you in - change the oil yourself at the very least when the bike hits 600 - it'll only cost you a few quid, if you can change the filter youself then do that as well - but still take the bike in for it's "official" service as soon as you can.

If you're going to have the bike a long time it'll give you piece of mind at least.

Heck, as a last resort take it to Probike, they are not THAT bad to be honest. (Just dont ask them to fix a puncture, a refusal means a second RAC trip to a less PC garage)

I had mine done at 550 mls.
I'd say get it done before 1000 mls and make sure you stick to the running in guidelines strictly !! I work with BMW's and a new M3 goes 1200 miles befor its 1st service so im sure a 650cc twin wont suffer any long term affects by have a slightly later than reccomended service.
Its probably worth pointing out that the "first service" is not only a change of oil but a chance for the garage to make sure the bike is bedding in properly, checking chain tension etc !!
I ran my bike in properly and it has now done 1400 mls and is getting faster and faster and i think im doing slightly better mpg !!
If its logistcally impossible to get it in sooner rather than later i would maybe ask the dealer to confirm in writing that a late 1st service will NOT invalidate the warrenty !!

good luck !

+1 the first lot of oil in the bike is mineral oil (I think, its defo different anyway) to help with the running in process.....by the time you have done 600miles its also full of swarf and crap which you dont want to be thrown around your engine by revving it hard.

So first service is quite important.

I think 600 miles is too long personally and on the last motor I did a rebuild on had the owner change it at 100 miles. Most of the critical stuff is gonna happen within the first few miles anyway IMO.

This was one of the oil screens on my KTM when i first changed the oil, the engine had done two hours use from brand new:

This was after i cleaned it a bit, you can see more on the towel

After this initial change the engine has been clean as a whistle each change, up to 4 or 5 now...

edit: the green section of the screen is just over an inch long or so...

See what I mean! Imagine how much much smaller swarf must be clogging the filter and floating around not getting caught.

lets not get carried away lads !!
There is a filter in there after all !
Do you think motoring journalists who get new bikes from manufacturers run them in and change the oil on time ?!
And when the manufacturers get them back and sell them on they still give the warranty !!
Intersting topic and 1 im sure could be debated for hours!
Lets think ourselves lucky we dont live in the days of rebores and head-tightening at 1000mls !! haha !
As already stated i think if ridden steady you will be fine to do over 500/600 mls !
