Is the remainder of the boss on the engine case threaded?

If so I reckon as long as you've got a few full threads there you could fit a longer steel adapter with some loctite, clean it all up fully and degrease before fitting.

Adapters and longer bolts can be got from Merlin Motorsports , you'd need to decide what thread it is and maybe even have to use the old filter stub as a donor adapter in order to fit one of the extension bolts (male-female-male for example). Got to be worth a try.

Alternatively take the old stub to a local machine shop and ask for a longer version to be made, might cost a few quid but hey................

There's only about 2 threads left inside the engine

I'm not mechanical enough to do a full engine rebuild, I was just about coping removing the outer bits, cleaning them and putting them back on again.

I'm guessing if I take it to a mechanic even with a donor engine casing I'm looking at several hundred quid

I feel like absolute crap at the minute, just gutted at my own stupidity. Was happy to get it back in a fairly repairable condition and I've just gone and destroyed the damn thing.

Is it time to throw in the towel and think about breaking it for parts?

Chill winston.

Crank should go in some curvy cases alright, which I've got here (was gonna eBay/scrap them soon..). You'll need some new main bearings and a gasket set.

Also might lose the oil cooler but it doesn't need one anyway.

Edit: worst case scenario...

OK, a couple of threads, but is there more depth of bore which could be threaded?

If so a "plug" tap could be used to add some more, I'd expect normal machining practice to leave you a good 6mm or more clear bore beyond the thread, it makes for easier production machining if the thread doesn't go right to the bottom of the bore but as a one off (and in dire circumstances!) it can be done fairly easily.

I'm guessing the thread will be 1.5mm pitch in which case if you could get half a dozen full threads (ideally nearing 10mm depth) I'd feel reasonably comfortable. Oil filters, albeit in steel, only have a few threads of engagement.

What do you reckon the depth is?

never fear. i dont think you have broken anything on the casing.

have a look here: assuming that you have a 2005

Sorry, I don't want to come across like a complete flapper, it's just a bit of a mare because I felt like it was starting to come together and now I've got another major setback before I can get back on the road.

Still angry with myself but a little calmer now. Almost kicked a mug of tea through the greenhouse, that would've been the cherry on top.

There's about 5mm behind the threads before it gets to the inner ring (shiny bit in http://www.lazymanc.com/images/recov...er_damage2.jpg)

If you're right bibio that'll probably one of the most relieving things he'll ever read!

Hmmm, can you see how much is left in? Tap the rest of it out carefully might be an option...

Unfortunately I think it is definitely part of the casing, it seems to be a single piece as far as I can see.

The bolt faired better than the surrounding hole:

hi again, i think you must of missed me in a past thread concerning the allen key, i offered a hand then and if its not to late! i am offering to help again.
my background is car engines and the magic i once pulled off with the liquid metal was unbelievable. i think with a bit of know how and luck you could get away with a very cost effective repair.
