I doubt it would work but I would love to see the reaction/justification of the police.
That'd be a bad thing to say. You should say, at most, that you accelerated past the slow moving caravan and then returned to the speed limit. Don't say you only slowed down because the van was there, or you'd have just shot yourself in the foot!

Can anybody tell me what would happen in you stop and go back to the van and ask for the calibration certificate and proof that it was tested before use that day. Establish what equipment is being used and how it is mounted and who trained the operator
These seem perfectly logical requests to me as they are all relevant if a prosecution is pending and a refusal to disclose the information would be a contributory factor to your defense

You would get nowhere at the roadside. Those questions would be answered in court of you were to dispute the operators claim of excess speed.

I'm assuming you were driving the car at this point "put the foot down" if you were on the bike you are obviously fine unless you were reversing.

A guy got a ticket (in N Wales, I think, but where is irrelevant) for doing the same thing... overtaking a tractor in a country lane.

He tried to appeal on the grounds that it was safer for him to briefly break the speed limit than to pass at it. He lost.

You're allowed to break the speed limit (within reason of course) during overtaking to increase safety by spending less time on the opposite side of the road. Even says so in the highway code.

If you were clocked by a scamera van, but went past it with say, your foot over the plate... what could they do you for? (Other than speeding, if there was a copper waiting further down the road)

When learning to ride a motorcycle I was instructed to "go as fast as my vehicle is capable of during the time it is necessary to stay on the wrong side of the road".

When I queried this they said "if your bike will do 80 within that distance you are entitled to do so, as long as you decrease speed safely once the manoeuvre is complete".
