Put it in neutral when trying to start it, makes the sidestand switch is irrelevant. What lights etc. are on when you turn the key? Have you checked the fuses?
Check the wires from your right switchgear to the bike, make sure they haven't been severed or crushed against the yokes or anything.

Lights on are neutral light, oil and the yellow one. I havnt actually checked the fuses yet, thought that would have prevented any lights coming on at all. All indies, headlight etc work fine and it started without incident about 5 mins before I stopped for petrol.

You reckon its just coincidence that I'd been changing the gear lever? I'll check all the fuses and switch gear tmrw but it just seems like too much of a coincidence that it happened after I was mucking around with it.

Ignore the gearbox, it will be fine with the engine running, they aren't meant to shift gears stationary.

Probably one of the idiot switches. Probably the clutch one. See if it will run if you crank it by shorting across the starter relay.

to short the starter relay*, put the keys in the ignition set to 'on' and find the main fuse under the right hand infill panel under the seat, there is a black and a red wire short these two connections...ignore the sparks.

*I think that's how you do it don't hold me responsible if not

Yes to the clutch switch question and as said by someone else too, if its in neutral the sidestand switch is baypassed for you.

If your gear selection is still a bit sticky once you have got it going and feels like its only neutral and first....i had the same problem.
Its easily fixed thankfully but i wont waffle on here in case its not a problem. Please post up again if you get it going but still cant select gears. I rode home on the motorway with this problem once. Managed to get up into 4th but the coming off the m-way it wouldn't shift down at all so i had to rev it like crazy at the lights to get going again. Not fun, lol.

I'd just filled it up when it wouldnt start at the petrol station. I'm certain the problem is electrical but we'll see later on I guess.

It lives!

Today was the first chance I've had to look at it and it turned out to be a simple fix, just the ignition fuse. I do deserve a Darwin award for overlooking the fuses before I started checking bits of the loom but never mind, it works again. Too bad it was hailing outside the garage when I got it firing
