Unless you do alot of trackdays, I find I seem to have about 2mm of tread more at the sides on the rear.. IE 1mm in centre, I may have 3 or 4 at the sides, yet no chicken strip. Simply because there isn't the space on the public road to push the edges so tread wear is less. Hopefully with the Roadsmarts I'm eventually going to get, I'll see a more rounded profile for longer, which I think is the point of the sport touring multi-compound tyres.

Dual compound has its place, you can get some wierdness where the transition is though, some odd wear patterns.

Avon reckon to use a continuously variable belt pattern for the same end.

and then ironically, Chris, launched their own dual compound tyre - the VP2.

So what does that tell you about their continually variable belt system?

Continental claim the same for the road attack (12% more rubber on the road) and put another couple of mm of rubber on the tyre so they can get good mileage and stickiness from one compound. But by putting on extra rubber, you're going to get more squaring off effect in the long term.

The BT016 seems to be the best system for all round use but I'd like to hear from Bridgestone about their wet weather performance. Do the three compounds have the same, greater or lesser wet grip? I don't want a tyre that gives *less* grip when I lean over in the wet due to cooler, sportier rubber. It's all very well having Hypersport rubber at the edge in the dry but not so good if it's like riding on a cold Supercorsa pro in the wet when you get to the edge!

Some good points above thanks
Just seen these: http://www.pirelli.co.uk/web/motorcy...t/default.page
and they seem to get a good write up. Looks like a gimmick though.

I really dislike dual compound tyres. Every one I have had while living in Wales has suffered from 'cupping' in the softer compound area as it wears faster than the centre. The last ones (BT-021) were bald on the shoulders but had 2 mm in the centre when I changed them. The cupping effect gives really horrible transition into lean as you 'fall' off the centre ridge onto the shoulder. The local tyre fitter said he sees that 'a lot around here with these tyres'...

So I guess their effectiveness depends very much on the type of roads you ride.

Deffo does. For me I love to hoon around the nice roads when I can, but I do a lot of motorway/fast straight road commuting so for me they are a god send as they dont square much with the commuting and through the summer when I can push it they wear evently where single dont...

What market are the BT 016's aimed at exactly? If the centre two compounds are for wet weather as well as dry id use them, I dont lean enough in the wet to use the edges tbh, dont have the confidence after an incident.

The BT016's are aimed at the Hypersports market, competing with the Pilot Power and Diablo Corsa III, and the Dunlop Qualifer/RR.

A review and comparison of loads of tyres (inc BT016) put it as one of the best and it had good cold and wet grip apparently.

How long they last? You got a link to the review?

Wish they would do a triple compound going from hard to medium to sofy/very soft! With a good grip pattern like the roadsmarts which have slick for the last 10-15mm of the tyre, the bit that your only likely to use in the dry unless you are mental in the wet...
