(As we have R&Gs on our SV I want to know what the weak point is so I can try to improve it. Can't stretch to replacement bungs though.)

Also, I would suggest that any bung is better than none, especially on a naked or half faired SV.
The radius cut on the base of the bung for aesthetics greatly increases the stress on the bolt causing it to fail.

Cheers YC, I can see the logic in that. I take it Motosliders are a plain cylinder shape, then?

I'm presuming the R&G bolts are already high tensile, so could be a struggle improving the fixing arrangement. Might have to consider cutting the bungs down: They won't stick out as far but if it makes them more robust "on duty" ... Hmmm, time to get the tape measure and straight edges out, perhaps!

RIP SV650 X curvy, crashed and written off December 2019.
I'm (procrastinating about) fixing up an old Yamaha FZ600 to get myself fully back on the road.

Between me and treacle, we have crashed 2 sv's-both with r&g crash bungs and all 3 times they have done their job which is to save the main parts of the bike, the only one that snapped was in treacles off when it slid up the road and hit and kerb full on, but up to that point it was doing its job

That will break any bung.
R+Gs bend back too easily IMO though they are better than nothing.

Motoslider base is broader so moment arm to cause the deformation of the bolt is greatly reduced. Also main engine bolt is huge compared to the bolt in R+G bung.

R+G bolt is not high tensile it appears to be hardened and tempered for toughness to allow lots of deformation.
