Well I may have found the problem. While I was doing the throttle body synch, I noticed a split in one of the vacuum hoses. Having now replaced it, I can see the immediate difference. It now idles much better than before, and the light hasn't come on yet at 90 miles. If I get to 110 I'll be a happy man.

brilliant was it only a small split then? let us know how you get on what sort of riding do you mainly do? town? long rides in the countryside?

Mostly town and A-roads while commuting to work, rarely the motorway. I don't get much chance for weekend blasts

The light made it's first appearance at 105 miles, and it's still going on and off at 109, so that's a 20 mile improvement. It was just a small split, I can't tell you which tube it was exactly, but there were no leaks so it must have been a vaccum feed for something.

I think the issue here is most definitely riding style rather than a fault with the bike. You need to learn to ride smoothly. The idea is to have a good average speed achieved by having a high minimum speed, not a high maximum speed. I have 2 1000sK3's and they both return a long term average of better than 55MPG having covered over 80K miles between them. This means I get 155+ miles before the reserve comes on and on occasion 170+ miles. Sure, I can have the reserve light on in less than 100 miles but that sort of riding is neither safe nor legal on the public highway. To show you what I mean, consider this. I get 13K out of a front pilot sport, 6.5K out of a rear pilot sport, 25K out of a set of front pads and 45K out of a set of rear pads. Just stop giving it full throttle everywhere, lay off the brakes by forward planning and reap the benefits.

Then how come he's back to 105 until the light flashes after replacing the suspect vacuum hose if it was his ride style?

mabee coz he aint 'brimming' the tank. i know if i stop filling when it reaches the top i can get up to 20-25 miles less out a tank of fuel.. but 'brimming' it gets a good couple ltr more in..

I don't give it full throttle, I don't ride harshly, and the increase I got to fuel economy is a direct result of sealing an air leak. How can you tell me it's not a fault with the bike when I found one? If it was my riding style I would not have noticed the difference in tank range overnight, both when it lowered and again when it went back to normal.

I've already said all of this in my first posts, so before you start giving me riding tips, please review what I've already stated. Oh, and I always fill to the same level, so it's not the amount of fuel in the tank that has changed my range.

Maybe you were hypnotised so that your riding style changed really quite dramatically overnight and it was in fact nothing to do with the problem you solved

Of course the above is all said tongue in cheek. I just find it interesting how quickly people are you jump onto their high horse and criticise someone's riding style, most of the time without ever seeing it.

Keep an eye on it long term. 1 tank full giving 15 more miles is not a very conclusive test. Can you be absolutely certain the same amount of fuel went in, you rode exactly the same in exactly the same conditions on exactly the same roads? 105 to reserve is still a bit pants init? A car would do better.

I think 105 is consistant to other owners of sv1000 . I know mine doesnt go anywhere near 150 miles. I wish it did, my old curvy managed 150 for first light.
